What happens when the story does not end where we expect it to? In Luke 15, the parable of the prodigal son takes a turn that most of us overlook. After the younger brother returns home and the celebration begins, we meet the older brother standing outside, arms crossed, refusing to go in. This final third of the story is where Jesus aims his sharpest words, and it is where we are invited to take an honest look at ourselves. The older brother represents something subtle and dangerous: a life lived in close proximity to the Father without ever truly knowing the Father's heart. We explore what it means to serve out of obligation rather than love, to keep all the rules while missing the entire point, and to stand on the outside of grace while being convinced we deserve it most. The spiritual lesson here is not just about wayward younger brothers finding their way home. It is about whether we, the ones who stayed, have truly come home ourselves.
