The Living Word: Why the Bible Remains Our Absolute Authority
The Living Word: Why the Bible Remains Our Absolute Authority
In our modern world, where truth seems relative and everyone claims their own version of reality, there stands one unchanging foundation: the Word of God. It's not just another book gathering dust on our shelves—it's the very breath of God, speaking into our lives with authority, power, and transformative truth.
The Book That Defies Time
Consider this remarkable fact: over 1,500 years, across three continents, in three different languages, thirty different authors penned the words we now hold as Scripture. Yet somehow, impossibly, they all point to one person—Jesus Christ. No other ancient document comes close to the Bible's manuscript evidence or historical accuracy. From the oldest copies to the newest translations, the message remains consistent, unchanged, and unchanging.
The Bible isn't just a collection of religious texts or moral teachings. It's the living, breathing Word of God that penetrates our hearts, divides soul from spirit, and judges the thoughts and attitudes of our innermost being. As Hebrews 4:12 declares, it's "alive and active, sharper than any two-edged sword."
Jesus on the Word
In Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus makes a stunning declaration about Scripture. He doesn't come to destroy the law or the prophets—He comes to fulfill them. Every jot and tittle, every smallest letter and decorative mark in the Hebrew text, matters. Heaven and earth will pass away before a single word of God's truth falls to the ground unfulfilled.
This is Jesus declaring the absolute authority of Scripture. In a culture that rejects absolutes, this stands as a radical claim. When someone says "there are no absolutes," they're making an absolute statement—a contradiction that reveals our deep need for unchanging truth.
Three Essential Steps
Knowing the Bible exists isn't enough. Having multiple copies sitting on our shelves doesn't transform us. We need a three-fold approach:
Know the Word. We must open the Bible and read it. When we open the Bible, God opens His mouth. The most consistent place we hear from God is sitting before an open Bible, praying and asking Him to speak. Knowledge of Scripture provides the foundation for everything else.
Believe the Word. Intellectual knowledge alone produces nothing. We can be Bible scholars who know every verse and historical context, yet remain unchanged. This is orthodoxy without orthopraxy—belief without practice. We must genuinely believe that what we're reading is true, authoritative, and applicable to our lives.
Apply the Word. Jesus illustrated this with His parable of the two builders. One built his house on sand, hearing Jesus' words but not doing them. When storms came, his house collapsed. The other built on rock—hearing and doing what Jesus said. When the same storms came, his house stood firm. Application is crucial. We demonstrate what we truly believe by what we actually do.
The Whole Counsel of God
We can't treat Scripture like a cafeteria, picking the promises we like while ignoring the commands that challenge us. "I'm blessed in the city and in the field!" we declare, while conveniently overlooking the calls to obedience, sacrifice, and holiness that accompany those promises.
Every part of Scripture serves a purpose. Second Timothy 3:16 reminds us that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, and correction for instruction in all righteousness." We need the history, the poetry, the gospels, the epistles—all of it. The Old Testament isn't outdated; it points us to Jesus and helps us understand the New Testament more deeply.
Jesus: The Fulfillment
The entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, tells one story—the story of Jesus Christ. He is the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. Every promise, every prophecy, every shadow and type finds its fulfillment in Him.
In Genesis, He's the Word creating heaven and earth. In Exodus, He's the Passover Lamb. In Leviticus, He's the Holy Temple. In Joshua, He's the conquering warrior. In Ruth, He's the kinsman redeemer. In Job, He's the living redeemer. In Isaiah, He's the suffering servant wounded for our transgressions. In Daniel, He's the fourth man in the fire.
And the story continues into the New Testament. In Matthew, He's the King. In John, He's the Word become flesh. In Acts, He's the risen Lord. In Romans, He's our justification. In Hebrews, He's our great high priest. In Revelation, He's the Alpha and Omega, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
It's always been about Jesus. It will always be about Jesus.
The Power of One Verse
Sometimes we think we need to master the entire Bible before it can impact our lives. But consider the power of holding onto just one promise with unwavering faith. Isaiah 53:5 says, "By his stripes we are healed." That single verse, believed and declared with conviction, has sustained countless believers through illness and hardship.
The Word of God isn't an end in itself—it's a means to bring us into intimate, satisfying knowledge of God. It's how we taste and know the inner sweetness of God Himself in the core and center of our hearts.
An Invitation to Go Deeper
You'll never be more spiritual than you are scriptural. The depth of your spiritual life directly correlates to the depth of your engagement with God's Word. It's a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. It's what we hide in our hearts to keep from sinning.
The question isn't whether we own a Bible—most of us have several. The question is whether we're opening it, believing it, and allowing it to transform how we live.
The Word of God stands as the absolute authority in a world of shifting values and relative truth. It's inspired, powerful, and eternally relevant. And at its center is Jesus Christ, the living Word, inviting us into relationship with the Father.
Will you accept that invitation? Will you commit to knowing, believing, and applying God's Word in your daily life? The Bible isn't just a book—it's God speaking directly to you, offering guidance, correction, hope, and life itself.
Open it. Read it. Believe it. Live it.
Your life will never be the same.
